Reynolds School Students Partner with City of Reno and PRSA Sierra Nevada to increase diversity in the industry
RENO, Nev. Feb. 19, 2019 – Five racially diverse University of Nevada, Reno students plan to amplify diversity in Reno’s public relations and communication fields. The PRSSA Diverse Nevada Bateman Team are hosting a summit March 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Reno City Hall. The summit agenda will educate industry professionals, the community and students on challenges of diversity and address how to recruit and retain people of color, specifically in the public relations and communications industry. Reno City Councilman Oscar Delgado will make an announcement at the Summit.
In addition to the Diverse Voices Amplify PR Summit, the team is working with UNR faculty, professionals in the field, high school and college students to bridge the diversity gap. Tactics include inspiring high school and college students with local speakers, Live Streams with national professional speakers, including a professional featured in Diverse Voices: Profiles in Leadership featuring stories about successful diverse professionals overcoming racial barriers in the workplace. Students are addressing PR, business and communications faculty about the diversity gap with recommendations. PRSA Sierra Nevada contributed a grant for 10 student sponsorships to join PRSSA and receive the book as inspiration.
The team created their Diverse Voices Amplify Public Relations campaign as part of a national competition to expand PRSA Foundation’s diversity and inclusion goals. Students researched November to January, generated a plan and now are in the implementation phase Feb.11 through March 11. Students will evaluate results and submit their campaign on March 29th.
